Established in 1983, El Kala National Park is one of the most diverse national parks in Algeria. It lies in the extreme north-east of the country. It stretches over an area of 76438ha and is bounded on the east by the border between Algeria and Tunisia, on the north by sea, on the west by Cape Rosa, on the south by the foothills of El Ghorra djebel.
The park is composed of a mosaic of forest, lake and ocean dune, giving it a high biological value and environmental cooperation within the Mediterranean basin. It is a great destination for nature conservationists because of its unique ecosystems that consist of a marine ecosystem, mountains, dense woodlands, picturesque forests and numerous lakes. This unique ecosystem earned it a Biosphere Reserve status by UNESCO in 1990
The extensive ecosystems within the park have created great habitats for wildlife habitation. Approximately 87,000 varieties of animals and birds of which many are on the endangered list have been recorded here.
For avid bird watchers, El Kala National Park has a great number of bird watching towers and younger visitors will enjoy exploring the mini-zoo and eco-museum. Creating these facilities and promoting the biodiversity of the park has seen an increase in foreign visitors, but the park aims to create a larger tourism opportunity. water birds
